Battle River Shock (26) vs. Edmonton Chargers (12)
Game Story: Battle River Shock
SHOCK ROCK DEFENDING CHAMPS: There was no doubt the coaches had the Battle River Shock ready for the opening game of the season, as the SHOCK roared out to an 18-0 lead in the 1st quarter and hung on for a 26-12 victory over the defending league champions, the Edmonton Chargers.
The team's depth was evident with 8 different rushers carrying the ball. Stas McPhail led all rushers with 11 carries for 81 yards. Picking up where he left off last year, Brandt Kolybaba scored twice, once on a 26 yard ramble up the middle and later with a nice 10 yard reception in the endzone. Cole Stewart turned in a very solid day at quarterback with only one incompletion, and some great scrambling behind the line.
The defence came ready to play, and had kept the Chargers off the scoreboard until the 4th quarter. Fast and mean, the hits were solid and a plenty, including 3 sacks, 10 tackles in the backfield for losses, and 2 turnovers. Adam Kuntz recovered a fumble while introducing himself to Chargers all day long, and Griffen Cymbaluk ball hawked a pass late in the contest. Other defensive standouts included Drew Dennis, Logan Sabourin and Josh Harkema.
It really was a great team effort, and a solid start to the season. During this week, you can rest assured the coaches will be working on the SHOCK's discipline, as they wracked up 21 penalties for 160 yards.

Battle River Shock (44) vs. St. Albert Storm (18)
Game Story: Battle River Shock
SHOCK CALM STORM: Another great team effort by the SHOCK, ignited by a 72 yard game opening kick-off return by Tylor Henry, as the SHOCK opened up a 30-0 lead and paced themselves to a 44-18 victory.
Stellar play by the offensive line enabled Cole Stewart to hook up on 3 TD passes, 2 to Henry (49,1), and 1 to Taylor Waldbauer of 34 yards. Showing a very balanced attack, Dale McDonald found the end zone on the ground 3 times with scores of (8,1,1).
The Defence was again very sharp from the opening whistle, not allowing a 1st down by the Storm until very late in the 2nd quarter. Stand out play by defensive backs Ryan Fowler and Jordan McNabb who had several tackles and pass deflections, allowed an already hungry front 7 to shut down the Storm running game.
Kudos to the parents for the cheers, and the running of the SHOCK flag down the sideline. Keep it coming, and we'll see you in Spruce Grove tuesday night !!!

Edmonton Mustangs (13) vs. Battle River Shock (8)
Game Story: Battle River Shock
MUSTANGS SHORT-CIRCUIT SHOCK: Ironically, the Battle River SHOCK may have played some of their best football in a 13-8 loss to the Edmonton Mustangs on Tuesday night. After jumping out to huge early leads in their previous 2 games, the SHOCK had their hands full with a determined and prepared Mustangs team.
Both defenses dominated from start to finish. At the half, the SHOCK led 8-4 with the lone touchdown coming off a short nifty run inside the 5 yard line by Stas McPhail. The offensive line provided adequate time for quarterback Cole Stewart who often found himself scrambling looking for recievers, only to find them blanketed by a solid Mustangs secondary. The running game, which ran for 245 yards last game, was stymied, leaving 1st downs few and far between.
The SHOCK defense were equal to the task, stopping the Mustangs on a 3rd and goal in the first half. Logan Sabourin continues to display outstanding speed and ball recognition skills, tackling ball carriers in the backfield and found himself on the receiving end of the lone SHOCK interception.
With less than 4 minutes remaining the SHOCK offence had the ball twice looking for the go ahead score, however, faced poor field postion, and a lack of rhythm due to penalties which plagued the SHOCK all night long.
The SHOCK will look to rebound this Sunday night at Clarke Park, for a 5:30 kickoff against the 1-1 Sherwood Park Wolverines. See you there...GO SHOCK GO !!!

Sherwood Park Wolverines (0) vs. Battle River Shock (18)
Game Story: Battle River Shock
SHOCK DE-CLAW WOLVERINES: With injuries and players away with other commitments, the SHOCK demonstrated great depth in an 18-0 victory over Sherwood Park. Give the coaches credit for inserting players in different posititons and making it work. Penalties. What penalties? The SHOCK saw alot less laundry flying their way. Nice job!
The running game got back on track with excellent blocking from the offensive line. Tanner Green had the opening SHOCK touchdown on an 83 yard run, where he refused to go down. Dale McDonald is now showing why he was the Player of the Year in Central High School Football. He would not be denied the end zone on a 15 yard TD run, and juked his way to another 52 yards on a spectacular run off a punt formation. Logan Woods added an 11 yard ramble up the middle for the SHOCK's 3rd score.
Defensively, Adam Kuntz put the team on his shoulders and made tackle after tackle, from side line to side line, including a leaping sack as the Wolverines tried to get back in the game. Sheldon Wiebe also made it into Sherwood Park's backfield to get the QB, not an easy task considering the size of the Wolverine players. Logan Sabourin continues to make big plays, this one a 58 yard interception return while the game hung in the balance.
The SHOCK actually get some time to practice now, with their next contest coming up Wednesday May 5th, 8pm against the Millwoods Grizzlies at Foote Field. See you then fans... Believe the Hype !
Game Story: Midget Tier I - 2010-05 - 16
Parkland Outlaws (2) vs. Battle River Shock (16)
SHOCK JAIL OUTLAWS: It had been 3 weeks, 21 days, 504 hours or 30,204 minutes since the Battle River SHOCK played their last game, so understandibly it took a little while for the rust to fall off. Sunday night at Clarke Park the SHOCK advanced to the Midget Tier I Championship with a 16-2 victory over the Parkland Outlaws to conclude the regular season.
It was 0-0 after the first quarter and the SHOCK led 8-2 at halftime. Dale McDonald opened the scoring with a great 25 yard run to the end zone off the left side, and then followed it up with another run for the 2 point conversion. The only other score was a 21 yard scamper by Skyler Sargeant that left defenders reaching at air with only 3:31 remaining. Tylor Henry hauled in a reception from Cole Stewart for the convert. Stas McPhail offered up some hard running for big yards in the 4th quarter to seal the deal.
The SHOCK finished the season with the top defensive unit, and it was easy to see why tonite. The defensive secondary played extremely well. Greg Fowler is always in the right spot and made some big hits. Zach Semanuik showed why he's one of the best tacklers on the team, and also made a fumble recovery. At Safety, Colton Hutchinson was johnny on-the-spot with a 34 yard intereception return. The defence hasn't given up a touchdown in 2 games, a couple reasons: Adam Kuntz plays linebacker like a tank, and again was busy shutting down the run up the middle. Logan Sabourin... Sabourin, all he does is make plays with 2 quarterback sacks including a forced fumble on this evening.
This is a developmental league, and coaches you sure are developing some fine football players. Parents you're developing some fine gentlemen, the kind that share smiles and take time to sign autographs for Atom players who've come out to watch, and the kind that display modesty after a win that is simply.... priceless.
So the stage is set... this Wednesday, 8pm at Foote Field, it's the Battle River Shock vs. the Edmonton Mustangs for the Midget Tier I Football Championship.
Believe the Hype !!!
